OK, in that case I would suggest first looking for blocked connections and/or Deny rules. Sometimes we block a website we don't like, just to find that other sites require that connection to function...

Looks like the real culprit may have been Avast... I uninstalled it, and little snitch and safari seem to be working just fine now... perhaps it has something to do with the proxy setup of Avast...
