I stayed with 1.4 until the devs introduced integration with notification center on Mountain Lion, which though not great, is still pretty good. Now I'm worried that it may be impossible to script Growl 2 due to apple's sandboxing requirements.
Though it is possible to applescript alerts for Notification Center without Growl:
