Re: Chrome connecting to websites I am not visiting

I don't know about chrome, but you raise an interesting aspect about web sites and how they frequently visit and pass on information to other sites without your knowledge. Wikipedia is actually a good site in that from my tracking it only visits one or two other sites that are clearly its own (e.g. wikimedia.org).

If you are atall interested or concerned then I would recommend trying the collusion browser plug-in/extra disconnect.me (available for chrome and safari as far as I am aware). It tracks which site you visit and what that site then visits "on your behalf" and will (by default) block those additional sites that are known tracking sites (though you can switch that feature off). It then displays a nice graphic showing where you have visited and which sites that site has visited on your behalf. Web sites collecting info/tracking is big business.

I have Ghostery, Disconnect and Collusion plus adblock and google's own google tracker script installed and still other sites show-up !!

Another possibility for Little Snitch showing "the wrong site name" is where the site is hosted by e.g. akamai. I believe that Little Snitch uses reverse DNS and I often see the wrong URL appear as the server IP is actually hosting loads of sites. If you know the site, Network Monitor allows you to select the site name using a pop-up menu (or to see other sites that might be the true one). Just click on the domain name shown in Network Monitor ...
