Alright, I found the solution. I currently use Command-1 through Command-9, and Command-zero, to switch to "Spaces" one-through-ten.
I also use Command-Option-1 through Command-Option-6, to switch to "Spaces" eleven-through-sixteen.
(I use Lion 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro, manufactured in Oct./Nov. of 2007 (it is a Mid-2007 model)).
I find that I can still access the L.S. Command-1 through Command-3, by pressing additional modifier keys, such as Control-Option-Command-1,
through Control-Option-Command-3 .
