all sorted now, thanks. Had to figure out how to drag the bar around as obviously that's the thing that I did without realising (hold Cmd for future reference). Maybe also worth noting that this behaviour appears to kick in as soon as the bar as dragged below the midline of the screen, even if there is plenty of space for it still expand downwards.
